San José to Puerto Viejo: every way to get there compared

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca sits about 210 km southeast of San José, on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. There are four realistic ways to make the trip, and the right one comes down to your budget, your luggage and how long you want to spend on the road.

The four options at a glance

Prices and times are approximate and change with season and traffic. Use them to compare, not as exact quotes.

Option 1: the public bus (cheapest)

The MEPE bus is by far the cheapest way to reach Puerto Viejo, and locals and travellers use it alike. Direct buses leave San José from the Caribbean bus terminal (Gran Terminal del Caribe) several times a day and take around five to six hours with stops.

It is basic. There are no reserved seats, and you pay cash in colones, but it gets you there for very little money. Come early in high season, since seats fill up, and keep your valuables with you.

Option 2: shared shuttle

A shared shuttle is a tourist minivan that picks you up at your San José hotel and drops you at your accommodation in Puerto Viejo. It costs more than the bus but skips the terminals and connections, and the vehicles are air-conditioned and comfortable.

It is a popular middle option for solo travellers and couples who want the convenience without paying for a private transfer.

Option 3: private transfer

A private transfer is your own vehicle and driver, door to door, on your schedule. For a family or a group it is often the best value per person, and it is the most comfortable choice if you have a lot of luggage or want to stop along the way.

Option 4: domestic flight (fastest)

If time matters more than money, you can fly. Domestic airlines link San José (SJO) with Limón in about 40 minutes, and from Limón it is a short transfer (around an hour) to Puerto Viejo.

It is the quickest way to cross the country, and you get an aerial view of the rainforest on the way. You just add a transfer at the Limón end.

The return trip: Puerto Viejo → San José

Every option works in reverse. Direct MEPE buses run from Puerto Viejo back to San José through the day, with the first departures early in the morning. That is worth planning around if you have an onward flight from SJO. Shuttles, private transfers and flights all run the other way too; on a departure day, a private transfer or an early direct bus gives you the most reliable timing.
